Ex Bom Jesus Sugar Estates, Angola 0-4-2T "Gazengo"

Arn. Jung 847/1905

Updated - 15th May 2006

Also discovered during the Sandstone team's visit to Angola, this locomotive is another gem of the collection as it is one of only two Arn. Jung products believed to survive in Africa. On visiting the Bom Jesus Estate a solitary steam locomotive was found. Although built by Jung the loco carried an Arthur Koppel works plate, which led to confusion about its identity. Arthur Koppel ran a railway contracting business as well as being part of Orenstein and Koppel from where most of his locomotives were sourced. This locomotive was ordered from Arthur Koppel but built in this instance by Arn. Jung and shipped to Portuguese West Africa in June 1905. The locomotive was formally identified with the assistance of John Middleton and others.

The locomotive has been stripped at Bloemfontein and found to be in exceptionally poor condition. This is in no small part to the run down condition in which it was operated having also been out of use since at least 1969. No decision has been made as yet whether to restore it to working condition or to execute a cosmetic restoration for display. It is now at Hoekfontein.
