Restoration of McLaren Traction engine No. 767
Update 24th October 2008
The Sandstone Heritage Trust recently visited Keith Stevens in Natal in order to inspect the McLaren engine. Considering the derelict machine that was delivered to him Keith has done an excellent job. We do however have a couple of requests for assistance from McLaren owners.
- Makers plates and other brass items of identification. In order to make these we need close-up photographs of what would have been fitted to an engine like this.
- For stationary engine work we need a governor. Keith was contemplating making one but we decided to research the international market for the availability of a suitable governor. Can anyone offer us any assistance?
Useful data supplied by Keith.
We had originally been told that one could not laminate rubber tyres onto traction engine wheels in South Africa and that they would have to go to the UK . Keith proved them wrong and found a qualified subcontractor to do the work.
