Not so big Flugel
13th September 2007
A scrappy day to say the least. Did a lot of odds and ends that will never make the headlines, but they all eat into your time. So let's see what the picture book has to say anyway..............................
As you see, the weather was really good and Bob the builder elected to carry on his trade out of doors. This is good, as it left more room for us to work on the compressor. Actually, I think Bob is now finished his commission with the wagon.
I reassembled the head of the compressor and then refitted it to the cylinder. Then fabricated a lifting eye which conveniently screwed into the lubricator hole. Those who know their way round with these compressors will wonder why I keep reattaching the governor. It's because I have machined a blanking piece to go into the pipe joint to act as a bung.
Grabbed this on the way down from morning tea. Brian the Lion has been trying his hand at candy striping as with a barbers pole.
Jimmy boy has his lathe humming away as usual.
'A222' is getting the compartment dividers in place and the lack of paint shows how much has been removed from the walls.
We brought the crane in and set the compressor vertical. Once again, it did two strokes beautifully then stopped. The consensus of opinion suggests that there's neither enough volume of air, nor pressure to do the job. Anyway, it's assembled thus far for now. We have it lashed to the stand that's carrying the boiler.
This picture is my tribute to Mirthful Max. You see what he's up to and I'm here to tell you, he just sticks at it. I wouldn't have the faintest hope of sticking at it the way he does. The carriage needs a plaque in a corner to record the effort he's put in here, all above his head!
Our Graham is finding the job a bit boring. (Or is that a 'boring bit'?) It's got him on his knees anyway! Another person who's putting in a great effort too. This time in cabinet making. The dividers are a real work of art and I doubt many will stop to even think about it when the job's done! That's the name of the game I guess.
Remember the gangers hut? Here's the interior paint job. So typical of the era, but if you were sick in bed, it'd make you worse!
Home time and I took this picture to illustrate a classic Nor' West Arch. Almost from horizon to horizon. Not often are they as well defined as this.
Then finally..................
