WN34 - Every Day Flugel

8th March 2007

That has to be the wrong title. It is not an everyday Flugel, it is a weekly Flugel. Forgive me.

Now, for today at the salt mines................
An early arrival saw the sun breaking on the hillsides...............

If I don't leave early at this time of year, I have the sun in my eyes for most of the 1/2 hr. journey.

Peter Jenkinson and his ongoing battle with the track work. As you can see, he has progressed again last Saturday. I have his account of the work in progress somewhere............

Three new 70lb tracksets are to be built up on top of road four and a

replacement 70lb left hand turnout. All this is going into road three,

replacing the old 53/55lb rail and sleepers. Some are past their use by

date.

When this has been done, the turnout leading to raod two will be further

back opposite the sump, giving more clearence in front of the shed doors.

Road two leading to the shed will be relaid with 70lb rail and newer

sleepers at the same time. Lots of prep work to do, that will hopefully

see the big job tackled after Easter weekend.

There's no moss on Peters shoes!

Now for a picture from last week. The machining of the seat rails for the 'L' wagon was a combined effort.

Bob the builder far left, Graham far right and Mark Webb nearer, form a team to process the timber.

WN34_3

Then today, Terry applied the white primer/ sealer as seen here drying. That's not all of them either.

WN34_4

A1177 is really on the move now. Graham sanding and painting window surrounds.

WN34_8

Mirthful Max doing it as only he can do.

WN34_5

Something of the history of A1177.

WN34_7

Keith spent his day making up the seats from the best spares we have. I took the opportunity to check out the method of assembly and spent a very pleasant time learning about the construction. Keith is a fountain of knowledge on these things.

WN34_6

During my time inside the car, Graham appeared at various windows doing his thing.

WN34_9

Just outside, a pair of end doors await further finishing.

Earlier in the day, I had occasion to open up at 'Loco'.

WN34_10

As the sun could assist, I shot this off in the hope that it would come out. Not very often you can get a shot right to the back of the shed. Pity so many of the engines are obscured.

The team is well on with the windows in the other half of Rm56. They are now working in end one, side 'B'. Sir Colin watches The Flying Scotsman (Ian McDonald, remember?) applying sealant to the window frames, prior to applying the trim.
All in all a good day. I spent most of my time assembling the valves to the head of the Westinghouse compressor and refitting the head to the pump cylinder. This involved a lot of last minute cleaning of ports and passages in the head and the careful fitting of the valve components. I hope I have done a good job!

I'm running slightly late with publication this week. Ian was worried it might be his fault. Never fear Ian, I was way laid after I got home! Cheers, 'K'.
