WN32 - The don't know what to call it Flugel

19th February 2007

Thanks to all those who welcomed me back. Had the feeling I'd been away for ages. Also, in answer to the often asked question, both by e-mail and in conversation, I am working on a little something to tell of my travels, but am snowed under with other issues right now. Be assured that there will be something before too long. Now for today.............................

01

Firstly, our Jolly Roger elected to refit the cab to 'F13'. Take a good look at the near empty track on road one of the workshop. It could be some time before we see it like this again. We took the opportunity to have a good tidy up while the going was good. What you can't see, is that the work on rivetting the stays on the boiler has begun.

02

Looks smaller outside.

03

Steve and Roger aligning the bolt holes of the cab. No prizes for guessing who was driving the crane.

04

It'll look better with a boiler up front don't you think?

05

There's a lot of activity out there. I wonder what they are up to?

06

Bending the roof rails for the 'L' wagon it seems. Steve has made a former for the job.

07

Bob the builder would have to be one of the most consistently busy persons in the team. Here he's using a router to bevel the edges of the seat rails for the 'L' wagon.

08

Steve and Terry try the curved roof rails for size.

09

A new hinge bracket is need for the firehole door on the 'F'. Removal of the old pin took some doing!

11

The railcar and the sheetmetal sides have been dreadfully smashed in, with filler up to 15mm thick in places. Todays picture of Sir Colin shows him getting under the 'bog' with hammer and chisel.
Meanwhile, inside......................

12

....................at this end, Ian McDonald has put in a great deal of effort to clean out all the mess, clean the floor, wash the seats and actually polish the upholstery. During my visit, he was getting stuck into cleaning the chrome. The whole end has a fresh fragrance about it. Before I forget..... our Ian managed to get a Flying Scotsman badge through 'E bay'. I have thus elected to call him our Flying Scotsman, having failed to come up with any other nick name. The speed with which he works, he really deserves the title.

13

We have needed some confirmation of measurements from manufacturers drawings for the 'F'. There has been a major reshuffle in the library and we now have a desk where this sort of thing can be done. Here Mike Webb and John Robb, both of whom are very conversant with such things, pore over a set of drawings for an 'F', but so far, what is needed has eluded them. The computer now resides under the blue cover at the far end.
On the way out......................
