WN22 - The Surprise Flugel

31st December 2006

The weather is dreadful. At home at midday it was 8 deg C. A blustery chilling Southerly wind and altogether unpleasant. How to spend such an afternoon? Why not go down and support the train running crew at Ferrymead? What a good idea!.....................

01

I arrived up just in time to hitch a ride. Seen here departing Moorhouse Station.

02

Uncoupling the brake hoses. Michael Whyman is never short of a smile. It's raining and cold and still he cracks a smile.

03

This should be the warmest time of the year, but in deference to the weather, there's a fire in the grate at Ferrymead Station. Crew L to R; Danny, Michael (with smile) and of course, Sir Colin. The Station master escaped this picture.

04

I don't think I have shown you the station masters quarters at Ferrymead Station so here you are.

05

This scene was shot on another trip. Driver Carl Pumpa is left, Danny with an unidentified junior behind him, Michael, Rachel (whose name I have been mis spelling, sorry!) and Blake Haddon-Peters partially obscured.

06

A footplate ride and here's the view from the firemans side of 'W192'. Ferrymead Station in the distance. The driver?...........

07

Blake, under the watchful eye of Carl.

08

The guards compartment in the 'Fa' car/van. Colin taking his ease. Danny outside braving the elements as only the young can do.

09

Despite the dreadful weather, the patronage had been good until late in the afternoon. This was really a wasted shot, but here it is anyway. I ought to have taken one inside the station showing the cafeteria facilities instead. Better luck next time.

10

Couldn't resist this shot of trainee guard Danny. Looks right at home doesn't he?

11

Last drink for the day. Blake is about to turn off the water.

12

Last run for the day and patrons are thin on the ground. The shape of things to come shows in the overhead catenary. This part of the system has now been officially audited and passed with flying colours. Keep an eye on this space as they go through the practical testing regime in the new year.
