WN07 - Fine day Flugel - by Kerry Young

12th  October 2006

Yes indeed, a really fine day indeed. No need to light the eco unfriendly fire today. So what did we do?

Well, for starters, the Saturday crew had changed out a frog from a points set, for installation down by the Ferrymead station. Today, it was sitting on a crane runner all wired up for signalling, all of which suggests input from our Rachael. Let's see now...............

1

Looking down on the frog set from the deck of the crane.

2

Here, the wire bonds.

Further out, I could hear a two stroke (two smoke as I have heard them called) doing its thing and I looked about to find............

3

Our Ray doing his thing with the ever growing grass. Driving as usual, this time a weed eater.

4

Why do I keep showing the railcar? Because there's such a lot of work being done on the exterior. What you don't see is the rust proofing round the windows and other places.

5

For our non local readers, this is a rather awkward view of the drivers controls. Less handles for obvious reasons.

6

I had to go into the steam shed earlier on and while there, I noticed the early morning sun shining on the side of our 'C846'. How to get a picture? With difficulty. The one from above was not much good, so I settled on this one of the running gear. Note how thin the tyres are. One of the several reasons it will remain laid up.

7

So what became of the food outlet after the bakery closed? I noticed this sign up today, but there was nobody within.

8

'F' parts drying in the sun. Any flat surface becomes a workbench. Remember?

9

The 'L' wagon needs another headstock at the other end too we discovered. None around we could salvage, so Roger is narrowing this beam by the Time honoured method of 'depth' sawing across and chiselling out between the cuts and then tidying with an electric planer. Yes, that's our Jimmy checking out the work.

10

Still on the same job, but removing the old to make way for the new. Roger wielding the gas axe to cut off the old headstock.

11

Mike Webb and I put in most of our day drilling the side footplates for the 'F'. Having done that, we began countersinking the holes with a tool that Mike made from scratch.

12

Home time and the inevitable gatherings of people wanting to impart the last bit of gossip for the day. Here Dave Hansen back to camera chats to Sir Colin, with Mirthful Max offering his bobs worth.

More next week! Cheers, 'K'.
