At the recent Clarens Heritage Association symposium, hosted on behalf of the Heritage Association of South Africa (HASA), Sandstone was honoured to receive a Gold Certificate Award for collecting, maintaining and exhibiting one of the finest collections of heritage transport and agricultural machinery in South Africa, and for ensuring that these grand examples of past implements and practices are preserved for future generations.
All our readers know our passion at Sandstone for our Oxen and we have been breeding more of these Afrikaner cattle over the last months. In spanning them for haulage duties is not always that easy and recently we had to bring together the six head that have proved very troublesome and disobedient when in spanned.
We recently received two articles from Stewart Currie at the RSSA Reef Branch, both from Allan Jorgensen, published many years ago in South African Transport magazine. “7 Light Rails”, from September 1978, has a piece on the Lawley locomotives of Buzi Sugar, Mozambique, two of which survived in the Peter Rampton collection in the UK.
We recently ran a story on our Morris Ten after its restoration was completed, see:

Since we published that article we have established that our vehicle’s chassis number, 2673, identifies the car as a 1933 model and not a 1934 model as originally thought.
Sandstone has become a regular destination for some of the prestigious Rovos Rail tours in South Africa. Whilst they cannot arrive by rail anymore, they do travel by road from Bethlehem to visit us. Last week we organised a train trip for them and as our Sherman Tank has had its repairs completed we ran that alongside the train together with a full span of Oxen adding value to their visit.
We recently received the VSSA Newsletter for October 2024 which features an article by Ralph Malan on scrapers used in the building industry where Sandstone features prominently.
We were recently honoured with a visit by the Ferrari Club of South Africa (SEFAC). A large turnout of these beautiful machines proved that the roads to Sandstone are now in working order! Our visitors kindly made their cars available for photography as well as a group shot after they had enjoyed a safe journey to Sandstone and a tour of the Heritage Collection.
