The Emerson Brantingham Big 4-30

2025 08 20 14 14 22 EB Repaired Aug 25 CW

This massive tractor, designed in the early 20th century, is always a crowd puller at Sandstone. The tractor was originally designed for road use in the USA but saw most of its work on the prairie wheat fields of the USA and Canada.

Recently it has had problems with cracked cylinders which have now been repaired as well as carburettor issues and has not been seen at recent Sandstone events. A concerted effort by the leader of our Tractor Volunteers, Chris Wilson, and assisted by Garth Wilson (no relation), has seen the Big 4-30 run again for the first time in a number of years. There is still more remedial work required but we now know that the unit runs well. Danie Pretorius, our lead Stationary Engine Volunteer, assisted by arranging 3D printing of a new carburettor float to get the Big 4 mobile again. You can see the first run on the short video and the care required to manoeuvre this big machine in a confined space. Enjoy the show.
