Additional motive power for Seb’s Railway

After a successful gauging test two more locos have been passed to run on Sandstone’s shorter system, Seb’s Railway. These are O&K 0-6-0WT 11112 of 1925, “Ermyntrude” and O&K 0-6-0WT 12140 of 1930, “Anna”. These locomotives along with other locomotives were acquired from Fazenda Tentativa Sugar Estate in Caxito, Angola.

They were originally 500mm gauge but with keyed axles they could be regauged and were to 600mm for the Sandstone system. One of the batch could not be regauged, 12493, and this was rebuilt in 2011 as a test run for the others before being exported to the Feldbahn Museum in Nuremberg in Germany where it is still operating today. Certainly a tribute to Lukas Nel’s locomotive rebuilding skills. Numbers 11112 and 12140 were completed in 2016. 12140. “Anna” is named in honour of Lukas’s wife who contributed so much to the restoration of Sandstone locos at Bloemfontein.

Together with Avonside 1624, this now gives Sandstone three larger locomotives to operate Seb’s Railway as they can easily haul four of the cane coaches or the Carlswald coach or one of the recently acquired Century City coaches
