Sandstone Steam Railroad Company remains faithful to the great age of steam in as much detail as possible, with buildings, fittings and accessories in keeping with the era.
The operation is in a position to display passenger trains, goods trains or a combination of both, all with unique historic associations. Static exhibits will complement special Steam days with the interests of Steam enthusiasts in mind.

The object of developing special traditional passenger services, utilising interesting locomotives and rolling stock is to attract local South African and international tourism.

01

Older freight rolling stock is being aquired in order to preserve these items from the current scrapping programme. It is unusual when travelling the world's preserved railways to come across train configurations which include freight rolling stock.

In the Eastern Free State, freight was an essential part of commercial and agricultural life, so to be true to the restoration brief, it is wholly appropriate that such rolling stock be included.

The company is keen to acquire at least one of every different configuration of freight wagon which would have operated on this line.

The company will continue to acquire and refurbish locomotives for it's own use and for use on a co-operative basis with Transnet Foundation Heritage Preservation, other privatised rail operators or enthusiasts groups. An important aspect of the companies business will be the leasing of motive power and rolling stock to other groups.

Ex Sena Sugar number 13
Peckett 2144/1953

Updated - 15th May 2006

The final example of the “triplets”, number 13 is in similar condition to number 11. When numbers 11 and 14 were shipped from Marromeu, number 13 was left behind as its position behind a container stack and surrounded by piles of other machinery precluded its easy removal and it remains at Marromeu. With sugar production and shipment taking all available space on the Sena barges to Beira, it is hoped that number 13 will be able to be removed by road in the not too distant future as the road system is upgraded. Although there is road access to Beira and Caia where the road to Sena branches off, the hilly nature of this final section precludes the use of the required low bed at this stage.

This interesting small locomotive was originally built for 15” gauge operation but was converted to 2 ft sometime during its lifetime. Little is known about its history and it is the subject of ongoing research. It was purchased by Sandstone from Ratanga Junction after their original steam hauled rail project was abandoned. It is currently undergoing restoration at the Hoekfontein workshops. When in service a number of small coaches will be constructed to fit its small profile.

This trolley is of the open type and often referred to as a “ganger’s trolley” as it was used by permanent way staff to access areas needing attention. It has been quite extensively rebuilt as it was in derelict condition when acquired. It is now fitted with a Toyota 2 litre diesel engine and gearbox. The drive to the rear axle is fitted with a reverse mechanism so that the unit has the same number of gears while travelling forwards or in reverse. The workshop staff at Hoekfontein use it for line inspections.

South African Railways Class 15F 4-8-2

Updated - 15th May 2006

This class of locomotive was the most numerous on South African Railways with 255 built by various manufacturers between 1938 and 1948. Included was an order to Beyer Peacock in 1944 whereby, the then Minister of Transport, the Hon. FC Sturrock, journeyed to Britain to make representations to the British Government for the order to be accepted when loco manufacturers were concentrating on munitions and the war effort.

Next to the ubiquitous Class 15F, with 255 examples, the Class19D, with 235 units built, is probably the best known of all South African engines. Designed as a branch line locomotive, the 19D was the last development of the 19 series which began with four locomotives ordered in 1928.

The Durban Miniature Railway

By Andries Keyser

image001

Back in the day, way way before my time, there once was a miniature railway that ran along the Durban Beachfront. The story is a complete mystery to me and many others, however in my collection of old pictures I have found some brilliant images depicting these steam engines running along the esplanade.

The extended Transnet strike prevented us from completing the logistical programme of bringing back wagons from Port Elizabeth which we purchased on a scrap tender. Wagons will join the restoration queue.

Sandstone's Lawley on the Avontuur Line

Sandstone's Lawley on the Avontuur Line

Sandstone Estates Lawley, No.106, was shipped to Port Elizabeth at short notice to supplement the NG15 trip arranged by the Apple Express for Geoff's Trains Ltd tour from the UK. While there were various limitations as to what the Lawley could do it was nonetheless good to see it back on the Narrow Gauge where they had operated over 100-years ago.

Our thanks go to David Benn for these photographs.
